PROTOCOL INTERPRETATION
Seven-layer protocol interpretation provides a detailed view of packets captured from an internetwork. It offers full support for over 200 protocols running over bridge/router-based leased line, frame relay, and X.25 internetworks. It displays the contents of each frame in English-language text at all seven OSI layers. The sophisticated filtering system allows network managers to focus on the trouble area. Flexible windowing displays network traffic in a variety of formats. Three formats Q Summary, Detail, and Hex Q are available simultaneously. Multiple viewports allow for up to six windows on a screen to enable comparisons among selected frames.
Protocol Interpretation Features
- Supports over 200 protocols including TCP/IP, Novell NetWare, DECnet, Sun NFS, X-Windows, IBM SNA, AppleTalk, Banyan VINES, OSI,
OS/2 LAN Manager, 3Com 3+Open, Oracle SQL*Net, DLSw, IBM LAN Server, X.25 and frame relay
- Isolates multilayered internetwork problems
- Includes intuitive pre-capture and post-capture filters
- Decodes bridge/router HDLC, frame relay, X.25/HDLC, and SNA/SDLC frame formats
WAN ANALYSIS
WAN Analysis provides traditional three-layer terminal-to-host WAN analysis. Broad protocol support includes complete frame relay analysis. In addition to supporting frame relay, the WAN Analysis helps solve problems on traditional SNA, X.25, async, and bisync wide area networks at speeds from 50 bps to 2.048 Mbps. The WAN software operates off the same RISC-based board as the Expert Sniffer Internetwork Analyzer to provide one complete WAN Analysis tool in a single package.
WAN Analysis Features
- Monitors networks in real time at speeds from 50 bps to 2.048 Mbps to support a broad range of network applications
- Interprets async, bisync, SNA, X.25, Q.931, QLLC, and frame relay protocols to cover the range of terminal-to-host environments
- Analyzes frame relay networks with specialized filtering, detailed statistics, and in-depth protocol interpretations to help implement and maintain frame relay services
- Tests physical lines with full-featured G.281 BERT up to 2.048 Mbps to provide a standard of quality against which to measure service
- Includes advanced filtering techniques to help network managers efficiently sort through vast amounts of data to solve problems quickly and accurately
- Creates specialized tests with the easy-to-use PowerScript Interactive test builder to address unique network requirements
FRACTIONAL SUPPORT T1
AND E1 CIRCUITS
Description
The T1 Pod and E1 Pod interfaces provide single-channel and multichannel access to T1 and E1 traffic for Network General's Sniffer Internetwork Analyzer. The T1 Pod monitors up to 24 DS0 channels or multiple DS0s for fractional T1 access. The E1 Pod monitors up to 32 64 Kbp channels or multiple channels for fractional E1 access. Both Pods route their data to the protocol analyzer. The protocol analyzer can then display and decode the data for analysis. Additionally, the T1 and E1 Pods track and report several important T1 and E1 physical alarm conditions.
Fractional T1/E1 Access
Program the T1 Pod to monitor from 1 to 24 DS0 channels at 56 or 64 Kbps, providing access to fractional T1 circuits. Program the E1 Pod to monitor from 1 to 32 64 Kbps channels, providing access to fractional E1 circuits. Multiple channels need not be contiguous, and different channels can be monitored for incoming and outgoing traffic.
Network Interfaces
The T1 and E1 Pods provide three interface connections to a digital circuit. These interfaces provide two receive ports (RX1 and RX2) and one transmit port (TX1). The E1 Pod can derive timing for signal synchronization from an external source via the Ext. Clock connector. The protocol analyzer provides power to the pod eliminating the need for a separate AC adapter.

Test Modes
Monitor
The T1 and E1 Pods Monitor test mode allows you to monitor and capture data from one or more 56 KB or 64 KB channels then display and analyze it with the Sniffer Internetwork Analyzer.
Terminate
The T1 and E1 Pods' Terminate test mode allows the Sniffer Internetwork Analyzer to monitor and capture data from one side of the T1 or E1 line while
transmitting test data on the other.
Drop & Insert
The T1 Pod Drop-and-Insert test mode allows access from 1 to 24 56 KB or 64 KB channels without interrupting other channels. The E1 Pod Drop-and-Insert test mode allows access up to 32 56 KB or 64 KB channels without interrupting other channels.
