USWeb Affiliate Network to use RSAC Internet Rating System

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - July 16, 1996 - USWeb Corporation, the first global end-to-end professional services firm specializing in Internet and Intranet Web services, today announced a strategic relationship with the Recreational Software Advisory Council (RSAC) to promote free speech and parental control on the World Wide Web. As part of the relationship, USWeb will apply RSAC's Internet content advisory system, RSACi to all Web sites created by USWeb Affiliates. Additionally, USWeb will provide corporate-level sponsorship of RSAC initiatives to both protect free speech on the Internet and promote the global adoption of a voluntary Web site content advisory system.

The RSACi rating system is a PICS-compliant, fully-automated system that relies on Webmasters to complete a detailed questionnaire regarding the level, nature and intensity of the sex, nudity, violence or offensive language (vulgar or hate-motivated) found within the Webmaster's site. By applying the RSACi rating system to sites developed by USWeb Affiliates, Web explorers using specific Web browsers or blocking software will have the option to prohibit or limit access to a site based on the Webmaster's description of its nature and overall content.

Parents, educators and consumers are fast becoming sensitized to the impactoffensive material can have on today's youth. "RSAC has respect for free speech while simultaneously empowering parents with choices informed by solid child health principles," commented John B. Livingstone, MD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Harvard Medical School.

"USWeb recognizes the need for parents, educators and Web users-at-large to make informed choices about what they and their children experience on the Web," said Sheldon Laube, chief technology officer of USWeb Corporation. "Rather than rely on restrictions established by legislation or outside agencies, USWeb will support the self- rating of content by endorsing the RSACi rating system for all sites created by USWeb Affiliates."

"The RSACi rating system provides an objective, detailed account of Web site content that lets the consumer decide, similar to the FDA food labels we use every day," said Stephen Balkam, executive director of RSAC. "As one of the largest emerging networks of professional Web service providers, USWeb is a tremendous partner. We're pleased to be working with them to promote voluntary self-rating of Web sites in response to governmental pressures to regulate content on the ëNet."

As part of the RSACi rating process, all USWeb customers will be asked to complete an electronic questionnaire located on RSAC's home page (www.rsac.org) which lists a series of highly specific questions about the level and intensity of the sex, nudity, violence or offensive language (vulgar or hate-motivated) found within the customer's site. Once completed, the questionnaire is then forwarded electronically to the RSAC Web Server, which tabulates the results and produces the HTML advisory tags that USWeb then places on the customer's Web site or page.

A standard Internet browser or blocking device that has been configured to read the RSACi system can recognize these tags - enabling parents, educators or general Web enthusiasts who use these products to either allow or restrict access based on a site's rating. RSACi is a leading content advisory system endorsed by Microsoft and CompuServe, and is pivotal to the blocking software compatible with the PICS (Platform for the Internet Connection Standard) platform recently adopted by the World Wide Web Consortium.

The Recreational Software Advisory Council is an independent, non-profit organization based in Cambridge, Mass. that empowers the public, especially parents, to make informed decisions about electronic media by means of an open, objective, content advisory system. RSAC's system provides consumers with information about the level of sex, nudity, violence, offensive language (vulgar or hate-motivated) in software games and Web sites. To date, RSACi has been licensed by MicroSystem's CyberPatrol Software, SurfWatch Software, and Microsoft Corporation. CompuServe (US and Europe) has also committed to rate all its content with the RSACi system. More information on RSAC and the RSACi rating system is available at www.rsac.org.
