Uses a generalization of the VLSM.
Move from traditional Class to a prefix.
Allows for route aggregation in the Internet routing tables.
- Reduces the size and therefore increases the speed
Works on the notion that we are routing arbitrarily sized network address space.
One entry in a routing table could possibly match millions of addresses.
